Advice to ministering the Neurodivergent Kids
In this post, we share six special tips that will undoubtedly help you in your daily work with neurodiverse children. Each tip is practical and can be applied in the classroom.
1. Personalize their way of learning:
Every neurodiverse child has a unique pace and style of learning. Keep these questions in mind: How do they relate to space? How safe do they feel? (Do they isolate themselves, want to play, want to leave, are they very restless?)
Example:
If a child feels insecure, allow them to bring an object from home that gives them comfort during class.
2. Give positive reinforcement:
Reward effort and progress, not just results.
Example:
Use a star chart or stickers to celebrate small achievements, like staying seated during the lesson.
3. Use multisensory teaching methods:
Integrate different senses into the lessons. Some children earn better through sight, while others respond best to touch, hearing, or movement.
Doing this will improve teaching comprehension, encourage interest and motivation to learn in each of your children, and help them retain more information, because every child has a different way of learning.
4. Adapt their learning environment:
Create a setting that reduces sensory distractions and supports their focus.
Example:
If your child is sensitive to noise, you can use noise-canceling headphones. If they are sensitive to fluorescent lights, seat them near a window with natural light. Offer stress balls or playdough to help them channel their energy while staying focused on the task.
5. Be patient, flexible, and empathetic:
Neurodiverse children may need more time to process informationand respond to instructions. Offer help without pressure so they don’t feel frustrated.
6. Learn and go deeper:
Get to know more about the child’s condition (special characteristics, what they like, what they don’t like, how they communicate). This will help you be better prepared as a teacher.
“Remember this verse and keep it in your heart:
"Be careful. Don’t think these little children are worth nothing. I tell you that they have angels in heaven who are always with my Father in heaven.” Matthew 18:10 (ERV)
Teacher, keep in mind that every child is unique. These examples are a guide, but it is vital to discover their individual needs and adjust strategies to best support them in their learning.
